Informazioni sul libro
Japan is a compendium of images that I made in 2005, when I received a grant from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago to travel abroad and document visual culture in Japan. Rather than go for the typical fare of cosplay and "hyper"-ness, or classical tropes of kimono/kabuki/minimal "beauty" that permeate the existing visual narratives I'm aware of, I strove to portray Japan as I felt it: modest, humid, poignantly empty like a vessel, full of character with a slight tinge of electric melancholy - yet dripping with aesthetic formality and rusty beauty at every turn. Even the apartment buildings throw away practicality and expanse to possess wondrous, imaginative facades.
