Informazioni sul libro
“Dear Grandmother” was born over a decade ago when I first commissioned my Grandmother Dot Martin to sew Half White 1980 a series about reflection and identity. Since then, we have worked on over 70 pieces together, with Dot adding her own touches of color or language along the way.
The works are symbolically bridging our gaps of distance, generation, race and culture, creating an inclusive backdrop for artistic creation and it has also helped us expand on our phone conversations about the weather.
This book was initially made for Dot Martin as a gift from her Granddaughter. It had accrued to Shantell that hew Grandmother had been sending her the collaboration piece for years and not kept any record of them. In this book you will find images of these pieces.

Shantell Martin
New York, NY
The work of Shantell Martin is a meditation of lines; a language of characters, creatures and messages that invite her viewers to share a role in her creative process. Part autobiographical, and part dreamlike whimsy, Martin has created her own world that bridges fine art, commercial and the everyday experience — conversations, objects and places.
