Awarded the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography
This is how an American soldier is made. For 27 months, Ian Fisher, his parents and friends, and the U.S. Army allowed a Denver Post photographer and reporters to watch and chronicle his recruitment, induction, training, deployment and, finally, his return from combat. For more than two years Denver Post staff photojournalist Craig F. Walker followed Ian as his life inside and outside of the U.S. Army unfolded.
The story was written by Kevin Simpson, Michael Riley, Bruce Finley and Craig F. Walker. It was reported by Riley in Colorado and at Fort Benning, Ga., Finley at Fort Carson and in Iraq, and photographer Craig F. Walker throughout.

Mea culpa. That should have said "...who have largely ruined heartfelt patriotism...", not how.

@Oregon: As a bleeding heart liberal, I'm also a flag-waving, patriotic American who is grateful for the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make every single day. Please don't lump us all into one category. I'm sure you'd be just as offended to be lumped together with the neo-con, right wing-nuts and Reps how have largely ruined heartfelt patriotism for many Americans by make it an all-or-nothing proposition. Speaking out in the face of injustice or poorly executed policies is just as much an exercise in patriotism as saluting the flag is. And both are what our men and women in uniform fight for.

Thank God this country is still producing brave young men willing to volunteer to protect us and our values. The libs and the dems have tried to destroy this patriotic feeling, but glad to know it's still out there...thanks to the moms and dads who support their warriors. it's hard, but they must be so proud. We love you guys
