Abstract | Thesis Statement:
This research illustrates what it means to house the Modern student within a monumental and inclusive context. With more colleges emerging within past decades and more students applying to schools, the need for student housing has skyrocketed. In addition, the total embodiment of a student has also changed over the decades, leading to a drastic shift of how the Modern student lives and learns. Specifically, in California, the University of California Los Angeles campus has articulated a Master Plan to add over 4,500 beds to five proposed on-campus sites; Drake Stadium, Bradley Hall, Warren Hall, Lot 15 and University Extension. This additionally designates that the new student housing facilities be designed and built before the city hosts the 2028 Olympics. The new and existing student housing facilities at UCLA Village will service students during its academic years, as well as service the participants of the Paralympics and Olympics during these monumental events. Out of the five locations, the campus has the greatest opportunity to designate the Drake Stadium site as a modern representation of its campus housing and a spot for future monumental and significant events in collaboration with its unique sporting location.
The Issue:
Regarding UCLA’s Master Plan, a proposal for dormitory-style student housing has been suggested for The Drake Stadium site. In celebration of the Modern student, the dormitory lifestyle is an outdated approach to
developing the site and advancing the successes of the Modern student in this era of tech-advancements and social behavioral changes.
