Informazioni sul libro
Memories lie dormant until needed. If we do not or cannot recall them, they are forgotten.
Emidio’s sculptures spring from a personal incident of forgetting, one where he could not recall the details in a photograph from a family album. There is much writing which explains photographs with extended physicality (frames, jewellery, alters, etc.) embed memories into our brain more successfully. The sculptures attempt to re-engage with the forgotten by creating physical manifestations of the gaps in recall in photographs. Emidio recreates the forgotten elements to reconnect with an experience, to drag it back from the pit of forgetting and reset it into memory. A speculative process certainly, but one that has helped draw him closer to the forgotten.
The photographs by Gabriella Sarnataro are taken in a style reminiscent of the original photograph where Emidio experienced the forgetting. It is another speculative process, where these new (sculptural) memories are reset into the mnemonic photographic realm.
