After leaving Korea in 2015 and beginning my life in the United States, I came to experience the world through the perspective of a newcomer. Unfamiliar landscapes, situations, and everyday moments all felt new and intriguing, while also leaving a deep impression on me. During this period of transition, photography became a way for me to observe my surroundings, understand them, and connect with the world around me.
In this body of work, I present black-and-white photographs that abstract natural forms and create distinctive abstract images. These works capture subtle moments, reflections, and movements that are often easily overlooked. By removing color, I focus on essence rather than appearance, and on sensory feeling rather than description. The monochrome imagery conveys both distance and intimacy, reflecting my inner state as an immigrant navigating between memory and present reality.
Through these photographs, I invite viewers to pause and experience quiet moments of stillness. Each image becomes a fragment of experience and memory, woven together into A Woven Narrative of Identity - an ongoing dialogue between where I came from and where I am now.
