For more than fifty-five years, I have photographed people in small towns, on city streets, along country roads, and in the places where they lived and worked. Most were strangers when we first met, and many remained so. Some I saw only once. Others I returned to photograph over the years.

These are not studio portraits or carefully staged scenes. They are environmental portraits shaped by conversation, curiosity, and the trust that can form between two people in just a few moments. I have never been interested in simply recording what someone looked like. What mattered was the encounter itself. What remained was not performance, but something more enduring: the feeling of being seen.

The photographs in “A Few People” were made from the early 1970s to the present, primarily in rural Ohio and the backroads of Florida. Together they reflect a lifetime of looking, waiting, and learning that the strongest photographs often reveal themselves slowly, both in the moment they are made and in the years that follow.

As the years pass, photographs change. Images that once seemed like simple documents begin to carry other meanings—personal, historical, and social. That is part of what gives them life. They are shaped not only by what they show, but also by what we bring to them.

This book brings together fifty photographs that have stood the test of time. Each earned its place not through novelty, but through endurance.

Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Stephen Crowley writes in the foreword:

“In the painting Nighthawks, Hopper viewed the diner from the sidewalk. Dan enters the diner and invites us to follow.”
