I once lived in Barcelona, and still have fond memories of the city and its people. The term 'The Great Enchantress' was used by Robert Hughes as the title of his famous book about the Spanish metropolis. However, the actual phrase was originally coined by the celebrated Catalan poet Joan Maragall, who calls out Barcelona's flaws - its vanity and chaos. And yet, despite his words, he admits he loves Barcelona anyway. The images contained in this book echo Maragall's sentiments: 'Barcelona! And with your sins, ours, ours! Our Barcelona, the great enchantress!' I attempt to capture the city's mystique through a process that constantly strives to balance its creative brilliance with its ever-present cultural unease. In my essay 'Barceloneta as Heterotopic Mirror - A Place of Different Spaces', I write: 'Through a series of selections and fragmentations of my time in Barcelona I interrogate how oppositions and alliances, juxtapositions and separations, fundamentally identify a relational process which functions best because of its different combinations.'
