From the very beginning of photographer James Blake's travels back in October 2004 in Morocco and The Western Sahara right up to October 2018 in Belgium and Germany, James has been photographing the people he sees around him. From Mexican cowboys to French beggars, from children on their holidays
by the beach in Cyprus to old men struggling in the winter's snow in Czechia, James has been fascinated by the people he sees and the lives they lead. At the same time James has been photographing Figurative Sculpture in all the countries he visits and decided, very early on, to attempt to 'sculpturise'
the people he photographs. What that meant was to treat people as if they were living sculptural representations (for the spilt second it takes to take the photograph) of themselves, of their village, town, city, country, of this world, and to convert those people, momentarily, but for eternity (within the photographic image) into works of art akin to the Figurative Sculptures that James sees and photographs. At the end of the day, both sculpture and photography immortalise the subjects they capture. So why can't ordinary, everyday people, also be remembered and immortalised just like Figurative Sculpture? The photographs in this book are more than just photographs, they are the capturing of momentary works of living art. This is a book of art and is best appreciated when seen through the prism of an artist at work with a camera 'sculpturising' the people he sees.
