Emphasis is a literary magazine dedicated to putting the “emphasis” where it hasn’t been before. We want to provide a platform for those who have been denied one by a literary mainstream that has long diminished the voices of women, LGBTQ+ people and other marginalized groups. We choose to publish work that other journals may unfairly neglect and strive to create a journal that gives all of our writers the spotlight they justly deserve.

We recognize the danger of silence, especially in the current political climate, and see this journal as a way to speak out against it. There are those who would want us to sit down. Here, we choose to stand up.
