Atop the Janiculum in Rome, more than a hundred portrait busts memo- rialize soldiers and civilians who fought for the Roman Republic during the period of Risorgimento. The busts range in date from the 1850s to the 1930s, and have been subject to various efforts at restoration and repair.
Here, these depictions of the dead come alive as photographs, our gaze met by a collection of differentiated individuals, collapsing back into marble only when we notice the cracks in their noses or cobwebs beneath their brows.
