Crossing lines are imaginary, but most of us know they very well exist if we are dealing with delicate matters. By judging behavior or verbal expressions, one is often inclined to interpret or even dismiss them before we know what their intentions may have been. Take for instance the life and actions of Jayne Mansfield, a famous movie star of the nineteen fifties and sixties. Not only did she study at University (she had a head for mathematics), she tried hard to be known as a serious actress. Unfortunately, her body measurements gave more rise to excitement than the level of her creative skills.
Of course, we are defined by the limits of our mind and body. We can stretch them up and explore uncharted territories of thinking, that poetry may unveil. Poetry, like any art, can contribute by pointing out what is unique in the familiar. Maybe then we can truly understand what great lives we live.
