Frances was born in the Bronx, New York City, and has painted and shown her work nationally and internationally for over forty years.

While an art student, she also studied modern dance which led her to a workshop with Yvonne Rainer, and subsequently to perform in some of Yvonne’s work at Lincoln Center and the Billy Rose Theater in 1968-9, and with Joan Jonas in dance and video in 1970.
Frances has also worked in animation, producing a 9 ½ minute hand drawn animation “End of the Day, End of the Day,” which has been shown in New York and Atlanta, and she is currently working on another fully scripted animation.
Her awards have included the Anonymous Was a Woman Grant, the Joan Mitchell Award, the Adolphe and Esther Gottlieb Individual Support Grant, National Endowment for the Arts Grants, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. Her painting is included in many museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art.
