John Rains is a resident of St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands, where he has spent years exploring, documenting, and preserving elements of the island’s natural and historical landscape.

His work brings together photography, botanical observation, and historical research, with a particular focus on trees, estates, and cultural sites across the island. Through projects such as this, he seeks to create a lasting record of places and living collections that might otherwise be overlooked or lost over time.

A degreed Electronics Engineer, originally trained in photography through traditional film, he continues to approach his work with an emphasis on composition, patience, and careful observation. His transition to digital tools has expanded his ability to document subtle changes in plant life, particularly within the context of phenology.

He lives and works on St. Croix.
