Mary Butler was born in Los Angeles, and moved to Mexico when her parents were blacklisted in Hollywood. She graduated from Radcliffe College, earned a Masters in Fine Arts from UC-Irvine and a Ph.D. from Stanford University, where she was a Wallace Stegner Fellow in poetry.

Mary has taught at Stanford, at Agnes Scott College in Georgia, and in community colleges in Los Angeles. She lives in Seattle.
