Nozaki Island is a small, stunning island located off the southwest coast of Japan. It is renowned for the natural beauty of its forested, mountainous landscape and for the quiet stillness of its sacred sites. To the north lies Okino-Kojima, an ancient Shinto Shrine, and Oe-Ishi, a megalithic rock structure. Atop a hillside stands the former Nokubi Church, commissioned by the descendants of Christian families who fled to Nozaki during the religious persecutions of the 1600s to practice their faith in secret. The island was once home to a population of around 650 people spread across three villages. Now, due to changing economic tides, the island lies empty. In place of its previous inhabitants, 400 wild deer roam freely through the remains of the island's natural, sacred, and abandoned spaces.
