My project, Dining on Asphalt, is a social commentary on waste in America. We live in a culture of excess, and food is no exception. According to a survey reported by the Texas Cooperative Extension Agency, 25 percent of edible food in the United States goes to waste. Nationwide, food scraps make up 17 percent of what we send to landfills. I am chronicling what does not make it to those landfills, and what is so brazenly cast off into our streets.

Using an artistic approach I try to raise the viewer's awareness of this serious issue. I capture my subject as it is in its environment and use an artistic aesthetic to engage the viewer. Thus the subject matter becomes appealing rather than repulsive. I document this experience, by photographing the imagery as I find it rather than manipulating it. The vantage point varies slightly to keep my audience actively engaged but the focus is always the fact that the food is on the ground. There are no distracting labels or packaging. The images range from the commonplace to the bizarre.
