Informazioni sul libro
In the seventeenth century, Dutch and Italian floral paintings were abundant. Their meaning ranged from moralistic sermons on the transience of worldly pleasures to statements of joy in the natural world. The use of chiaroscuro—characterized by strong contrasts between light and dark—was common. Classical voice instructors also describe the optimal balance of clearness and darkness in the singing voice as chiaroscuro: a combination of brilliance and resonance with warmth and depth. The images herein make use of this technique.
The photographs in this book are meant to serve as objects of contemplation. They invite the viewer to appreciate beauty—its details, colors, and rhythms—and to use the senses to connect to the heart. Live with these images, breathe with them, and enter slowly into their quiet essence. Let them be a mirror for your own internal beauty. Enjoy.

Informazioni sull'autore
Zohra Kalinkowitz has had numerous exhibitions in the San Francisco Bay Area and nationally. With a background in both photography and painting, she produces work that is a hybrid of the two. While the images are photographic, her process of working on them is fluid and painterly. She combines the compositional sensibility of the painter, the technical precision of the camera, and the flexibility of the digital medium to create images that compel the viewer to look beyond surface reality. Her work explores how the natural world communicates spiritual vision through beauty, asking the viewer to look more closely and see more sensitively. What we see transforms what we know. But also what we know changes what we see.
