Informazioni sul libro
This photographic portfolio is an attempt to capture everyday images in our social fabric that too often go overlooked. The camera raises my awareness of my surroundings and subjects—among them, a young boy playing in the sandbox; a woman pausing to examine a plant during a rainy street fair; a homeless man asleep in his wheelchair.
The focus on realism and honesty is drawn from Robert Frank, whose pivotal collection The Americans has served as a paramount influence. Photography and its role within documentary and social criticism are among the most important legacies of my school. Many renowned social documentarians, including Lewis Hine, Paul Strand, Doris Ulmann and Diane Arbus, have been closely connected to the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, whether as teachers or students. They have furthered the school’s progressive ideals and philosophy through their photography. One of the first educational institutions in the country to create a comprehensive photography program, Fieldston embodies a humanist, self-aware and reflective spirit that I have tried to convey, and deepen, through my work.
