André (Andrew) Stern was born in Munich, Germany in 1931 and immigrated to the United States in 1939. He earned a B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1952. Recognized for his photography in college, during the mid-1950s, Stern apprenticed photographers Hans Namuth and Evelyn Hofer. In 1959, he became a radio producer for the Voice of America, and in 1961 worked for Howard K. Smith at ABC News. He then moved on to National Educational Television (NET), where he produced award winning documentaries. In 1969, Stern was invited to established a new program in broadcast journalism, documentary, and photography at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California at Berkeley, where taught for 25 years. While there he produced many documentaries including the Polk award winning How Much is Enough? Decision Making in the Nuclear Age. Stern continues to take photographs and exhibit his portfolio, and travels widely. He lives and works in Berkeley, California.
