How well we teach the children
Practical things like
Religion, grace and grammar;
The lines between happiness and wealth,
Beauty and glamour;
To be early to bed and early to rise;
To stand in line, to be on time;
About he who does and he who tries;
How we only tell the truth
And little white lies;
That guns are evil
Unless they’re ours,
And then they’re okay;
How we avoid choosing
Between black and white
When there’s a green shade of gray;
And that we cherish them most,
And for them we piously pray,
When they’re off to shoot at other children
Who’ve been just as well educated as they.

One morning not long ago,
Mordecai woke up late and nearly old
He looked out the window at his lovely wife,
Already old and hanging laundry under the eternal sun
And to his mirror Mordecai said, yup, Happiness I’ve had plenty -
Yet from that reflected image he abruptly turned and hid
And moaned, oh god, but what have I done?
For from the day that he turned twenty,
Except for the time he hitchhiked from Naples to Madrid,
Mordecai spent his entire life
Getting ready for things he never did.
