The stories and novels of the Italian author Giorgio Bassani (1916-2000) are all set in Ferrara.



He describes a closed city.

Closed by its city wall, its long blind walls in town, its closed doors and shutters, its inhabitants, outcasting its Jewish citizens in the late thirties and forties of the 20th century.



Walking the streets of Ferrara in Bassani’s footsteps, the photographer Susanne Stoop has translated the melancholic atmosphere of his stories, that feeling of no escape from loneliness, solitude, exclusion and discrimination into the photographs.

The photographs have been taken between 2000 - 2007 during the Christmas holidays.





Susanne Stoop (1945) is a self-taught fine art photographer from the Netherlands.



From 2000-2007 she went every Christmas holiday to Ferrara, seeking and photographing the atmosphere of Giorgio Bassani's stories and novels.



In 2008 she participated in several exhibitions and was co-photographer of the book Strandcabientjes (Beach cabins). This book is in the Burb catalogue.
