Informazioni sul libro
In 1959 the author, Barry Smith, spent a summer on a manhauling expedition to the area just east of the mighty Beardmore Glacier, in Antarctica. The expedition was the first to visit the area since Scott and, at 84ºS, discovered the furthest south invertebrate life on the planet at the time. He and friend, Jim Wilson, later ventured south by yacht, 'Karoro', to the Auckland Islands, seen amid the glory of its southern rata bloom. Here they revelled in the superbly friendly animal life.
Later, in 2006, with his wife he visited more subantactic islands (eg Auckland, Macquarie and Campbell Islands) where several landings were made. They also made four landings on the antarctic continent. This book records in text and photographs the best of those different adventures to 'Latitudes South'.
