Informazioni sul libro
The height of the circle with just three stones left are 3.7m to 4.9m high. It is impressive how they are standing in the moorland. Originally this circle consisted of seven or eight sandstone slabs. Some of the circles have a diameter of 14.6m. One lonely stone is left of a circle that consisted of nine stones. This 4.3m high stone is in between of some stumps, still visible in the peat. Some of the other circles are just at a maximum of 40cm to 1.2m high.
The circles were erected in a period of much drier weather, before the growth of sphagnum moss and heather. Even in 1978 one stone circle was discovered completely submerged in the peat. The complex of circles can be seen as a part of a large sacred or ceremonial location.
The circles were used for religious and ceremonial activities during the Neolithic and Bronze Age on Machrie Moor. The stone circles aligned with a prominent notch at the head of Machrie Glen, where the midsummer sunrise should be visible on 21st June.
