bears ears national monument was 1.3 million acres upon its creation by president obama. there is an attempt by president trump's administration to shrink it to just over 200,000 acres, primarily for the sake of uranium mines. this is an attempt to photograph and document the landscapes we may lose due to the reduction of this beautiful and culturally significant land. there are currently three legal battles (by conservation groups, five native american tribes with cultural ties to the area and patagonia - an outdoor gear manufacturer) challenging the legality of the reduction. however, if those legal challenges fail, we may never again see these scenes.
