Informazioni sul libro
All profit of the sale of this book will be donated to the Red Brigade Lucknow.
Jessica Eva travelled to India in 2016 to meet the women of the Red Brigade in Lucknow India face to face, to collect the women’s stories first hand and document their portraits. Through the photographs, this book showcases the immense strength and humanity of the women, using imagery that is both powerful and vibrant.
Also included in the book is an essay and interview with Usha Vishwakarma, Director of the Red Brigade Lucknow. The essay and interview are by Thomas Marcinkowski, an independent journalist and human rights activist who journeyed with Jessica Eva to Lucknow, Marcinkowski’s articulate essay details the issues the Red Brigade Lucknow are fighting for, and how Jessica Eva was inspired to engage with the group and their struggle from half the world away.
This is a realisation of the aims of Jessica Eva’s artistic practice, that is to photograph women using the female gaze. It is the culmination of exploring her heritage as an Australian with an Indian mother that led her to forming a connection and then link with Usha and the RBL. Through her practice, she wishes to continue to explore and subvert the common representations of women, and this body of work is a significant starting point.
As an artist and photographer of human experience and existence she seeks to give the group a platform by monumentalising their presence in this series. This is achieved by printing the images on large scale photographs, using the enormity of the images to display the enormity of their contribution to the furthering of Women’s rights, health and safety in India. This is the only exhibited artistic project in Australia that has sought out the RBL.
